Help me with this card!

I have said it before and I'll say it again...I don't like making cards. I don't really know why, but I seem to rarely like what I make. Take, for example, this card, below.

It must have taken me an hour to create this and I still don't like it. Seriously!!??  So I am begging for your honest advice...what does this need? Is the background too busy? Does it need more buttons? Does the sentiment need to be on something different so it is more visible? Does it need to go in the garbage?? Please help!!

I will take your advice, redo the card and post the before and after.

I wait patiently for your reply. :-)

  1. OK, Shirley, I'll be honest! I love the colorful paper you've chosen, but to me, the stamp doesn't quite fit. I would use the stamp with more vintage papers, but that's just me. The sentiment might be highlighted a bit more, but truly, you may not like your card, but lots of people will! I am also hard to please when it comes to my own cards and I'm slowly learning that recipients are most thrilled by the fact I made it and are not critical of my composition.

    1. OMG, Kris, I never realized it, but I think you're right about using more vintage-y papers. I may have been trying to force these papers on the stamped tag.

  2. I am more of a simple kind of scrapper. I probably would not have put the smaller tags on it. I like the paper and circle but not sure about the red dotted paper. I probably would have gone with a more solid or a solid embossed paper.

  3. I think vintage paper would go better with the stamped image.. Although this would really be cute with swatches of actual fabric. Perhaps even sewn on. Then you could go with polka dots and more cheerful patterns. Although the emphasis this week was on tags I would ditch the small tags. Something needs to be done to make the sentiment more visible but right now I'm clueless as to what.

Now having said this I think a lot of people would be thrilled to receive this card just the way it is. There is really nothing wrong with the card just a little too busy for my tastes.

LOL! I often will spend hours making a card only to wish I had done it differently. Also a card I hate a lot of people will love when I post it on my blog. I think sometimes we are too critical of our work.

I look forward to seeing how you redo the card if you decide to redo it.

By the way I had a friend who used to take my rejected cards out of the garbage and give them to people. LOL! So don't be too hard on yourself. Remember one person's trash is another's treasure.

  4. I don't know . . . . I kind of like the surprise of the bright fun colors with the vintage tag. The only thing I would change might be how the sentiment is presented. It kind of gets lost in everything else. I also like Myoriah's suggestion of using some fabric scraps . . . . . we all know how much you love fabric!

  5. I agree with the others that the background paper needs a more vintage feel. I also think it needs something on the top left hand side.

    Just my two cents lol!

  6. Maybe position the sentiment on the top left hand side, and wrap the twine a couple more times, and remove one of the polka dot paper. But, at the end anyone who receives this card would be happy, because it was hand made and time went into making it. So at the end of the day, we are our harshest critics.

  7. Shirley, the card is cute and I love the polls dot paper but I would definitely tone the rest down with vintage-y colored solid paper with some inking/distressing around the edges. The sentiment definitely needs to pop more and I would agree about moving it to the top left side. I also think it would be really cute to sew (maybe zigzag) around the stamped image and maybe change the twine to a neutral more earthy tone to get into the vintage-y look.

I also agree that anyone would love to get this card and would just appreciate that you spent time to make the card versus buying it. I love it when someone thinks enough of me to make something instead of just buying it.

Can't wait to see what you do with everyone's suggestions. Have a great day!
