Nature is confused!

We have had such beautiful (read: HOT!) weather the last week or so, our orange tree is blooming. It, unfortunately, thinks Spring is here even before I've taken off this year's oranges!

While I do love seeing the blooms in Spring, I know that soon enough we will get a cold snap and these will be gone. I'll have to wait until true Spring. :-(

While I was snapping photos in the yard I have to show you this trunk of jasmine vines growing (strangling??) a tree. The braid-like vines are so interesting!

Looking for inspiration!

This weekend was our 26th year anniversary. Every year we head "down the road" to a Disney area hotel for a few nights. This year it was the DoubeTree Suites by Hilton Hotel at Lake Buena Vista.  We don't usually go to the theme parks, as there's lots of other stuff to do in Mickey-land and we've pretty much done every theme park many times when the kids were young. We saw a few (boring!) movies, ate in several restaurants, did a LOT of walking, and lots of people watching.

We usually take loads of photos of us and the surroundings each year SEE HERE, but instead of the usual photos I snapped ones of inspiration.

At Downtown Disney there's a balloon ride...the balloon has a cool quilt-like diamond pattern.
One night we went to Paradiso 37 for some appetizers and I snapped the wall décor.
The hotel had cool drapes...
...and pictures on the wall (reminds me of monoprinting and stitching)

and even the carpeting in the hallways! (This could be a cool free motion stitched and painted something.)

Bride To Be Banner Square 1 Masterpiece Tutorial + Giveaway!

For my (now) daughter-in-law's bridal shower in September, I made this mixed media banner that hung above the food table. It is made with Square 1 Masterpiece, the Cricut Expression and a bit of this and that! ;-)

Square1 Masterpiece - White Glitter, 1 sheet
Square1 Masterpiece - Black Glitter, 1 sheet
Square1 Masterpiece – White Permanent, 2 sheets

Background Instructions:

1.      Create a painted background on the two pieces of Square 1 Masterpiece white permanent sheets. I mixed several colors of acrylic paint and ink and used a handmade stencil. Let completely dry.

2.      Using the stamp and black permanent ink, stamp script all over painted background. Let dry.

3.      Using the lightest Distress ink pad, smear onto painted and stamped background. Wipe off with damp paper towel.
4.      Smear second darkest color and wipe off with damp paper towel.
5.      Smear darkest color of ink and wipe off with damp paper towel. Add more ink as desired. Let dry.

6.      With another stencil and contrasting color of acrylic paint, dab paint through stencil. Let dry.

Cut Banner Pennants

1.      Cut banner pennants from the prepared Square 1 Masterpiece. I have created a file for use in the Cricut Craft Room (CCR) using the Calligraphy Collection cartridge. You will get more pennants out of your fabric if you cut the pennant from scrap cardstock and use that as a template to hand cut from the prepared Square 1 Masterpiece. The banner pennants are 6” high x 4.389” wide.

2.      Cut backing from cardstock. I’ve used a thick 80# cardstock. These pieces are .5” larger than the banner pennants on all sides.

3.      Remove adhesive backing from prepared Square 1 Masterpiece and adhere to center of pennant backing cardstock.

Cut Letters

1.      Cut banner letters using CCR file once with White Glitter Square 1 Masterpiece and one with Black Glitter Square 1 Masterpiece. NOTE: The Calligraphy Collection font I chose does not have a shadow. But if you stagger the black and white glitter letters you can create a drop shadow effect.

2.      Adhere letters to prepared pennants.

Assemble Banner

1.      Add trims to bottom and sides of banner, as desired, using adhesive or stitching.

2.      Adhere or stitch banner pennants to ribbon, allowing enough ribbon free on sides for hanging.

Work in progress...

I saw this verse on Pinterest and thought how I must do a journal page with it.
I must be a mermaid
I have no fear of depths
a great fear of shallow water

Paris Subway Art Canvas + Square1 Masterpiece

Here's yet one more project I created for my oldest son's wedding party last month. The couple honeymooned in Paris (LUCKY!!)

Square1 Masterpiece – Black permanent or repositionable, 1 sheet
Square1 Masterpiece – Pink permanent or repositionable, 1 sheet
Square1 Masterpiece - White permanent or repositionable, 1 sheet
  •  Non-stick craft sheet or table covering
  • Stretched artist canvas – I used 10" x 10"
  • Acrylic Paint
  • Paintbrush or brayer
  • Foam stamp for background
  • Cricut Expression, regular blade and mat
  • Cricut cartridges: Word Collage and Wall Décor and More
  • Cricut Craft Room (CCR)
  • Painter’s tape or transfer tape, if desired
  • Tweezers and/or dental pick tool
  • Charcoal pencil, optional
  • Tissue or Washi tape, optional

1.      Paint the canvas front and sides in desired colors. When dry, use foam stamp and metallic paint (I used Ranger's Distressed Paint in Brushed Pewter) to stamp a light design on background.  Let dry.
2.      Cut Eiffel Tower swirl shadow using Wall Décor and More cartridge from the pink Square 1 Masterpiece. I used blade depth 3, pressure 3. Weed the design and apply to canvas.
4.      Paint the white Square1 Masterpiece your desired color (I needed gray!). Let dry. Cut Eiffel Tower, weed design and apply to canvas.
5.     Cut desired image from Word Collage (Key 11 or B1). Weed the design leaving the desired portions on the backing sheet. Apply to canvas. Using painter’s tape or transfer tape pick up each word or phrase from backing sheet and attach to canvas. I used repositionable product as it allowed me to take time to adjust letters. I find it easiest to start at the right of the canvas and use a plastic transparent ruler to gauge the letter placement.
6.  Outlining the Eiffel Tower with charcoal pencil gave it a more dimensional look.
I added a bit of tissue tape to the left edge because I didn't line everything up too well. (UGH!) But no one even noticed! ;-)
If you would like the Cricut Craft Room file I used to create this project, just follow my blog (at left) and leave me a comment with your email address. I'll send it ASAP!

Stamped card using the really old stash

If you know me well, you know I really don't like creating cards. I don't exactly know why. They are a smaller canvas, they should be "easier" to create, but is tough for me. But luckily I just received the new issue of Take Ten from Stampington so have loads of inspiration. I have the Nov, Dec, Jan issue and used the very first card on the very first page as inspiration for this one. PLUS I used a stamp I've never used before AND used only scraps (and a lot of old stuff).

The card is 5" x 7" on a white Bazzill cardstock base. Patterned papers are super old Chatterbox. Remember them?

I love to machine stitch on paper. It give such a nice personal feel.
The stamped panel is adhered with foam squares.

Pretty "button" brad by The Girl's Paperie - karlie mixed brads. Man, I'm using lots of really old stuff!! Love it! I seem to really hang on to things, don't I? ;-)

So happy to have been able to use scraps to create something. Not onto the many shelves of paper I have! ;-)

Altered Printer's Tray

One of the best things I made for my oldest son's wedding was an altered printer's tray. I love creating in the little compartments and using up all my embellishments.

I started off with a printer's tray from 7Gypsies and papers from the Echo Park You & Me Collection Kit.

Each of the little spaces held something special and meaningful about the new couple.
LOVE Bingo card, cancelled white roses stamp, beaded flower...

...Two heart pins and velvet ribbon, wooden heart...
..."I took a chance to follow my heart and it led me to yours."...
...beaded flower, epoxy heart...

...two birds on a branch (happily ever after), velvet leaf, little white buttons...

...the Eiffel tower(they are in Paris right now!)...

The brand new couple!
